These bags are light and easy to use, simply slip the straps through one another to fasten. Can either be carried in your hand or slipped over your wrist making these bags suitable for everyday basics as well as a great addition to any special occasion outfit.
Bags measure approximately 18cm in height with a 10cm by 11cm base. The carry strap measures 16cm from the wrist down to the bag.
These bags are based on a design from 1941 and where originally developed as an attractive way for women to carry their gas mask with them at all times.
By the winter of 1939 around 40 million gas masks had been issued. Supplied in a cardboard case with a strap made from a length of string, although not compulsory, people were advised to carry them at all times.
Handbags with special compartments for a gas mask and fabric covered cardboard cases soon became available. And it wasn’t long before the fashion magazines started to run articles telling women how to make their own stylish containers. “Make your gas mask container to match dress, costume or coat” they proclaimed.
